This month’s curatorial theme explores the domestic. Starting in 1972 with Chantal Akerman’s Work “La Chamber” and Ending with Laura Larson’s “One Minute Film” these short films work to introduce four decades of women video artist and filmmakers using the domestic as a platform for inspiration and a feminist critique.

Crystal Ann Brown (b.1984) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores motherhood and the poetics of the domestic. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at the Villa Terra Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Crystal is the founder of The Hown’s Den: Domestic + Nomadic Exhibition Space currently located in Kansas City, Kansas. In 2012, she received her MFA in Sculpture and Expanded Practice from Ohio University, and received her BFA from Kendall College of Art and Design in Sculpture with a minor in Art History.

SPECTRA is a Kansas City initiative that brings contemporary moving image artworks to local screens. This monthly platform presents a selection of avant garde and experimental works by regional, national and international artists. Each SPECTRA program is hosted by a different venue, reflecting the desire to develop a dedicated yet inclusive community audience. SPECTRA seeks to connect artists and audiences to communities and ideas outside their normal purview. In addition, SPECTRA aims to invite guest programmers, both local and national, to further this goal and foster a sense of connectedness.
